Franciscan Softball Serves the Scouts

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Small acts of kindness go a long way in the mind of assistant softball coach Jennifer Parker. So she gathered her Franciscan University Lady Baron softball team Wednesday night to volunteer at the Blue and Gold Banquet for Steubenville’s Boy Scout Pack No. 401. With preseason practice beginning today, it was a perfect service-oriented warm up for the Lady Barons.

The softball team served the dinner to the attendees, helped out anywhere necessary, and took care of clean up following the event.

“The opportunity came about because I was organizing the event for the pack,” said Parker. “My son is a Cub Scout in the pack, and so I thought this would a great opportunity to serve the local community.”

The Blue and Gold Banquet is an annual event, held this year at Holy Family Parish’s Malara Hall. Monseignur Jerry Calvini gave a blessing to the family and friends in attendance. Following the dinner, Scouts ranging from Tigers to Webelos were honored for their achievements.

“The Scouts loved having the team there,” Parker added. “Having the softball team reach out to the community reminds us all of how important we are to each other in even the smallest of tasks. The smallest acts of kindness go a long way.”

The Lady Barons have their first practice for the 2012 season tonight. Their official season begins Monday, March 19, with a home doubleheader versus Oberlin College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
