Pontarelli, Randall Honored by AMCC and University

Two Franciscan University seniors were honored at the conference and university level this semester. Track and field student-athlete Julie Randall and baseball player Anthony Pontarelli were recently named to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference All-Academic Team and honored by Franciscan with the FUS Kuzma Cup Award.

As the faculty athletic representative for Franciscan within the AMCC, Dr. Kim Georgedes chose Randall and Pontarelli for the 2010-11 All-Academic Team as the scholar-athletes who represented the conference at the highest level in both the classroom and in competition.

Nominated by their coaches for their excellence on and off the field, Randall and Pontarelli were selected by an awards committee above the other Franciscan senior student-athlete nominees to receive the 2010-11 Kuzma Cup Award. The award is named after Franciscan’s legendary head basketball coach Hank Kuzma.

Julie Randall is a native of Chippewa Falls, Wis., and participated in several varsity sports while she pursued a degree in accounting. She is a three-year member of the Lady Baron volleyball team and participated in track and field during all four of her years at Franciscan. As a senior, Randall served her track and field team as captain and holds the school records in discus and long jump.

Hailing from Spring Grove, Ill., Anthony Pontarelli pursued a double degree in philosophy and theology while starting for the Baron baseball team all four years. Serving as captain two years in a row, Pontarelli was named offensive MVP by his team and was nominated for AMCC Player of the Week honors multiple times. He led his team in several offensive and defensive statistics categories as a top Baron threat for conference opponents.
