Three Spring Athletes Named All-Conference
As baseball moves on and softball just begins, Franciscan University student-athletes from each were honored by the conference Wednesday afternoon. The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference announced its 2011 All-Conference teams for the spring sports with Erin Gulick, Jacob Machado and Luke Starre making the cut.
Earning third team all-conference honors, freshman Luke Starre earned the accolades as the Baron catcher for the 2010-11 baseball season. Hailing from Carrollton, Ohio, Starre appeared at the plate 117 times and started all 31 games of the season. With 37 hits, 10 of which were doubles, Starre brought home his fellow teammates 20 times. He topped off his statistics with a .374 batting average and a .924 fielding percentage.
Sophomore Jacob Machado was also named to the third team all-conference for his performance as second baseman for the Barons. A native of Denver, Colo., Machado led the team in several season statistics. With 46 hits, he scored 26 runs, batted in 21 fellow Barons, and hit 13 doubles while starting 31 out of 31 games. Known for his affinity for stealing, Machado went 11-13 in stolen base attempts for a .846 stolen base percentage.
The Baron baseball team went 6-25 overall on the season and 4-14 in the AMCC. This was the final season Franciscan University sponsored a NCAA Div. III baseball team.
Also earning third team all-conference was freshman Erin Gulick. Serving as the Lady Baron second baseman, the Strongsville, Ohio native served 30 out of 30 games and batted a .300 average. Holding the second highest RBI tally on the season, Gulick brought home 11 of her teammates while hitting 21 times.
The Lady Baron softball team went 3-27 overall on the season and 2-16 in the conference.
