Barons Drop Home Opener to Frostburg State

STEUBENVILLE, OH - Franciscan University of Steubenville baseball team opened up their home season with a double-header against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Frostburg State University on Friday.

The Barons dropped both games 9-3 and 7-0. In the first game senior Steve Daly sustained the loss on the mound for the Barons, throwing a complete game, giving up 12 hits and 9 earned runs while walking one and striking out three. The Barons struggled offensively, as they were only able to get five hits on the game. Senior catcher Rob Marrow went 1-3 with 2 RBIs. Junior Will Peyton also had an RBI.

Franciscan stranded 9 runners on base. Scott Eastman was the starting pitcher for the Bobcats, throwing 5 innings giving up 6 hits and 2 runs.

Offensively the visitors were led by centerfielder Jeff Kroboth who went 3-4 with 2 RBIs and shortstop Pat Sapp who went with 3-4 with 1 RBI. In the second game the offensive struggles continued for FUS. The home team was only able to get two hits, courtesy of right fielder Chris Clynes and Marrow. Sophomore Nathan Cain pitched 4 innings giving up 11 hits, 5 earned runs while striking out 2. Bobcat Trevor Connor got the win in a two-hit, 8- strikeout game. Connor is 3-0 on the season. Joe Garrity went 4-4 with 3 RBIs to pace Frostburg offensively.

The Bobcats improve to 10-9 (2-0). The Barons hit the road as they take a break from conference play to face OSU-Mansfield in doubleheader action on Tuesday. Game 1 is set for 2:00 p.m. Franciscan’s record now stands at 3-10 (0-2) on the season.
