Barons Baseball Drops Home Double Header to Penn State-Behrend
STEUBENVILLE, OH - Franciscan University of Steubenville’s baseball team lost a double header to the number one ranked opponent Penn State-Behrend in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference on Wednesday.
The Barons lost the first game 14-2 and the second game 11-2 to drop their record to 3-18 (0-8). Penn State-Behrend improves to 17-4 (10-2). In game one the Barons got most of their offensive game courtesy of shortstop Anthony Pontarelli and leftfielder Chris Clynes. Both went 2-3 while scoring a run.
David Dupuy drove in a run for the Barons while going 1-3. Starting pitcher Robert Penate went 3.1 innings, giving 8 hits and 7 earned runs while striking out two. Relief pitcher Will Peyton also pitched 3.1 innings giving up 6 earned runs off 5 hits.
In the second game, the Barons again struggled early in their offensive game, not scoring until the final inning. Second baseman Steve Jagla went 2-4, including a triple to right center to drive in Pontarelli in the bottom of the seventh to score the Barons’ first run. Clynes went 1-4 while driving in the only other run of the game, while Pontarelli went 1-3. Steve Daly was the starting pitcher, going 4.2 innings giving up 7 earned runs off of 10 hits while striking out 3.
Franciscan will take a break until April 14 when they hit the road to face AMCC opponent Penn State-Bradford at 1:00.
