New Pitchers for the Barons versus the Bobcats

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan University of Steubenville Barons baseball team hosted the Frostburg University Bobcats in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon, losing 5-0 and 13-3.  With the losses, the Barons fell to a 6-16 season standing and 3-9 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

The Barons played well in the first game, led by the pitching of freshman Stephen Darrenkamp.  Offensively, however, they could not produce a run, leaving the final score at 5-0.  The Barons had four hits in the game by Rocco Auteri, Anthony Pontarelli, Kevin Marrow, and Tom Costello.

“Darrenkamp pitched a nice game for us,” Barons head coach Dr. Robert Marrow remarked.  “He kept Frostburg's hitters in check.  We had eleven strikeouts, though, and that hurt us.  We kept them off-balance at the plate, however, but we just couldn't score.”

The second game started better for the Barons, who took a fast 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the second inning.  However, those were the only runs scored for the rest of the game and the Bobcat offense caught fire en route to the 13-3 victory.

Jacob Machado led the Barons offensively with two hits and one run scored while Auteri contributed one hit, one run, and one RBI.

“This was Dustin Pagano's first game pitching for us,” Coach Marrow noted about the game which held three pitching changes.  “He did very well.  Doug Arlitt also did a nice job when he came in, but we didn't do enough to back him up.  Andrew Radlicz also pitched for us for the first time and did very well, throwing strikes all around the zone.”

The Barons travel to West Virginia tomorrow to take on the Bethany College Bisons at 2 p.m.
