STEUBENVILLE—The Franciscan University baseball team picked up their first two conference wins of the year on Sunday in a doubleheader sweep of the D'Youville College Spartans. The games were originally scheduled to be played at D'Youville, but an unplayable field forced the Spartans to Franciscan's Vaccaro Field. The Barons clinched easy victories, winning game one 15-4, and game two 10-3.
Dan Brink got the win on the mound for Franciscan in game one with an exceptional six innings. In those innings he gave up just four hits, one walk and no runs. Brink finished the complete game with a line of four runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out four and walking just one.
Saturday was the offensive breakout game for Franciscan as the Barons totaled 15 runs (12 earned) on 16 hits on the afternoon. Ryan Marrow, Anthony Pontarelli, Charlie Parsons and Thomas Costello each tallied two hits and two RBIs, while Luke Starre led the way offensively for the Barons going 4-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.
The highlight of the afternoon for Franciscan came in the fourth inning with Pontarelli on second as Parsons took a 0-2 pitch deep over the 360' sign on the left field wall for his first homerun of the year. Parsons' homer pushed the score up 8-0 as the Barons cruised to a 15-4 victory.
In game two, Parsons played yet another big role, this time from the mound. In his winning effort he pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up three runs (none earned) on four hits, while striking out four and walking three.
Jacob Machado went 4-5 from the plate for the Barons with two doubles while knocking in two RBIs. Pontarelli and Parsons both went 3-5 in the second game, with Pontarelli earning two RBIs and Parsons earning one. Freshman Emilio Marquez also had a two-run single in the contest.
The Barons scored in all but two innings of game two as part of a more balanced offensive attack.
The two wins improve the Barons record to 3-10 overall on the year and 2-2 in conference play. D'Youville drops to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the conference. Franciscan is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Penn State Altoona for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
