NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Franciscan men's basketball team dropped a 78-50 decision to Westminster (Pa.) Saturday afternoon.
The Barons were led by sophomore Matt Trent with 10 points and five rebounds while classmate Joe Schriner chipped in nine points. Freshman Sean Hickey posted seven points in his Baron debut. The Barons shot 38.5% from the floor (20-for-52) while going 10-for-13 from the free throw line.
Trailing 24-9 with just over seven minutes to play, Schriner pulled down an offensive rebound and put it back up as he was falling to the ground to cut the lead down to 24-11. The layup kicked off a 10-6 run for the Barons as Franciscan cut the lead down to single-digits, 30-21, capped by a pair of free throws from Hickey with 2:37 to play. The Titans and sophomore Josh York traded layups before Westminster held a narrow 3-2 margin in the final two minutes to take a 35-25 lead into the break.
Trent hit a jumper to open the second half to get the Barons to within eight points, 35-27, but Westminster out-scored the Barons 11-5 over the first five minutes of the half to push its lead to 46-33, a margin it would not relinquish.
With less than a minute to play, Westminster hit a three to take a 78-48 lead, it's largest of the game, but senior Garrison Holmes made a layup on the Barons' next possession to bring the score to its final, 78-50.
