Barons Fal to La Roche in AMCC Opener

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan men's basketball team dropped its first AMCC contest of the season to visiting La Roche, 78-49, Wednesday evening.

The Barons were led by junior Juwan Perkins with 14 points and four rebounds while senior Keoni Sablan chipped in seven points and two steals. Sophomore Matt Trent pulled down a game-best 10 rebounds to go with his six points and block.

Senior John Paul Dombrowski made a layup after sophomore Joe Schriner grabbed an offensive board to give the Barons their largest lead of the game, 19-14, with 7:05 to play in the first half. Five-straight points from Ray Quan Phifer, including three free throws, tied the game at 19-19 before La Roche took the lead 21-19 with 5:49 to play. The Redhawks held that lead for the rest of the contest. La Roche pushed its lead to 10, 32-22 with 3:05 to play but Franciscan closed out the half with a 3-0 run to cut the lead down to seven, 32-25, at the half.

Sablan made a layup just under a minute into the second half to cut the lead down to five, 32-27, but that would prove to be as close as the Barons would get for the rest of the game. The Redhawks went on a 12-6 run to take a double-digit lead, 44-33, with 13:30 to play and cruised to the 78-49 win, outscoring the Barons 34-16 over the final 13 minutes.

The Barons shot 33.3% (18-for-54) from the floor and was 5-for-14 from three-point range. The Barons pulled down 36 rebounds and posted five blocks.
Franciscan hits the road on Saturday as the Barons travel to Penn St.-Behrend for a 1 pm tip.
