LATROBE, Pa. – The Franciscan men's lacrosse team suffered a 22-7 loss on the road to St. Vincent, Wednesday afternoon.
The Barons started the first quarter strong but the depth of the Bearcat bench was too much for Franciscan. Trailing 2-0, sophomore Joe Lomady won the face off at 10:58 and picked up the ground ball, and just seven seconds later, he handed it off to junior Mike Rosaschi. Rosaschi scored his 14th goal of the season to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Bearcats scored the game's next two goals to push their lead to 4-1 with 8:54 to play. Sophomore Dan McCartney kicked off a three-goal run for the Barons to tie the game at 4-4. McCartney scored an unassisted goal with 7:53 to play before Lomady won a faceoff and immediately scored for Franciscan. Rosaschi capped the run for the Barons after he scored the second goal of the game, this time off a pass from senior Paul Modzelewski.
St. Vincent closed out the quarter with a 5-0 run to take a 9-4 lead after the first 15 minutes. The Bearcats kicked off the second quarter with a 3-0 run over the first seven minutes to take a 12-4 lead. McCartney halted that run with his second tally of the game with 7:22 to play. Lomady scored Franciscan's final goal of the half just under two minutes later to cut the Bearcat lead to 12-6. St. Vincent scored the final goal of the half as the two teams took a 13-6 score in favor of the Bearcats into halftime.
Lomady opened the third quarter with his 49th goal of the season after winning the opening face-off and immediately picking up the ground ball. Now leading 13-7, the Bearcats went on a 9-0 run spanning the rest of the third and the entire fourth quarter to seal the 22-7 win.
Lomady led the Barons with three goals and an assist while McCartney and Rosaschi each had a pair of goals. Lomady was 10-18 on face-offs and picked up 11 ground balls.
Freshman Matt Marrenna posted 11 saves in the loss for Franciscan.
