ALFRED, NY – The Franciscan men's lacrosse team's season came to an end Friday as the Barons lost to Alfred State in the first round of the 2017 AMCC showcase, 16-5.
Despite the loss to end the season, the Barons had a record-breaking year. Franciscan finished the year 7-8 for the most wins in a program history. As a team, the Barons scored 199 goals and handed out 84 assists for 283 points, all three are single-season bests for the program. Individually, junior Jonas McCaig set the program single-season points and goals marks with 69 points this season, including 50 goals. Senior Paul Modzelewski set the single-season assist record with 25 assists in 15 games this year. Modzelewski finished the year with 26 goals to go with his 25 assists for 51 points.
Alfred State combined for 11 unanswered goals between the second and third quarters to open up a 14-3 lead going into the final quarter. After a pair of Pioneer goals to open the final frame, Modzelewksi scored a pair of unassisted goals in the final three minutes of action to bring the score to its final, 16-5.
Despite the lopsided middle of the game, Franciscan and Alfred State engaged in a back and forth battle in the opening 15 minutes. Joe Johnson scored the game's first goal for Alfred State before junior Mike Rosaschi took a pass from Modzelewski from behind the net and dumped the ball in the top of the net to tie the game at 1-1 with 11:17 to play in the quarter. Ian Grana answered for the Pioneers before Modzelewski scored unassisted and freshman Andrew Thibault scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Modzelewski to give Franciscan its only lead of the game, 3-2, with 2:22 to play in the quarter. Teddy Alvarado scored just under a minute later to send the game into the first intermission tied, 3-3.
The Pioneers scored seven goals in the second and four goals in the third to take the 14-3 lead before the final quarter. Franciscan and the Pioneers each scored twice in the final 15 minutes.
Freshman Matt Marrenna made 14 saves for the Barons in the cage to push his season total to 167. His save total ranks him third in a single-season in FUS history.
Franciscan wraps up its season with a 7-8 record and a 2-2 AMCC record.
