STEUBENVILLE – On a blustery and cold Wednesday afternoon, the Franciscan men's lacrosse team could not dig out of a 15-3 hole at halftime and fell to the St. Vincent Bearcats, 25-10.
The Barons had their most productive quarter of the game in the fourth as they scored four goals on five shots in the final 15 minutes. Senior Jonas McCaig kicked off the quarter with his third goal of the game 2:13 into action. After an unforced Bearcat turnover, Franciscan was able to clear the ball and senior Mike Rosaschi flipped a pass to McCaig, who was waiting just outside the crease for the feed from Rosaschi. McCaig went low to cut the Bearcat lead to 22-7. St. Vincent responded with a pair of goals from Jon Succop sandwiched around a Stone Haberstroh goal to push its lead back to 25-7 with 8:46 to play.
Franciscan won the next faceoff and junior Dan McCartney picked up the ground ball to get the Barons on offense. McCaig started his attack with the ball behind the cage and sneaked around the crease to score the behind-the-back goal for his fourth of the game. After six minutes of back and forth play from the two teams, McCaig cut the lead down to 25-9 with his fifth goal of the game with 2:22 to play in regulation. The Bearcats won the next faceoff and their opening-possession shot went wide. St. Vincent recovered with the ball but sophomore Joe Corocran forced a turnover to get the Barons on offense. A pair of Bearcats found themselves in the penalty box and with nine seconds left in the 6-4 advantage, Rosaschi scored the last goal of the game off a pass from McCaig to bring the score to its final at 25-10 with 1:28 to play. The Franciscan defense was able to keep St. Vincent off the board for the remainder of the game.
St. Vincent jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first quarter before outscoring the Barons 7-2 in the second quarter for the 15-3 lead at halftime.
After an abbreviated halftime break, the Bearcats used a 7-3 third quarter for the 22-6 lead after three quarters. Franciscan out-scored the Bearcats 4-3 in the final 15 minutes of the game.
McCaig led all players with eight points behind five goals and three assists while Rosaschi and sophomore T.M. Thomas each scored a pair of goals. Freshman Joe Bartholomaus, Rosaschi and senior Leo Munday each handed out an assist.
Freshman William Muraski led the Baron defense with six ground balls while classmate Nicholas Brierley had four caused turnovers and four groundballs. Freshman Grant McKeown made 10 saves in the net for Franciscan.
The Barons hit the road on Saturday as they travel to AMCC opponent Alfred State for a 2:00 pm showdown.
