ORCHARD PARK, NY – Fresh off of their 2018 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference showcase win, the Franciscan men's lacrosse team placed four on the All-AMCC first team and senior Jonas McCaig was named the Offensive Player of the Year while freshman Jerome Harkins took home Defensive Player of the Year honors, as announced by the league office.
McCaig, a two-time first-team honoree, led the Barons with a school-record 84 points this season behind 42 goals and 42 assists. McCaig's 42 assists are a school-single season record. The senior eclipsed 200 points for his career in the final game of the regular season and is the all-time points and goals leader at FUS. McCaig ranked third in the conference in goals (37) and first in points (77) at the end of the regular season. McCaig was second in the AMCC with six man-up goals this season and first with two man-down goals prior to the showcase. McCaig registered at least one point in every game this season and ends his career on a 14-game point streak. McCaig had two 11-point games (4g, 7a against Medaille and La Roche). The senior is currently ranked seventh in the country in assists per game (3.00) and seventh in points per game (6.00).
Earning his first all-conference honor and major award in his first season with the Barons is Harkins. Harkins led the Barons with a school record 111 ground balls and 42 caused turnovers during the regular season and now has 125 groundballs and 47 caused turnovers in his freshman year. Harkins had a career-best 22 groundballs against Medaille and had double-digit ground ball totals in five games. Harkins caused a turnover in every game but one and led the conference in caused turnovers and was second in ground balls. Harkins currently ranks 14th in the country in ground balls per game (8.43) and 24th in caused turnovers per game (2.57).
Joining Harkins on the first-team defense is freshman Will Muraski. Muraski anchored the Baron defense as a captain in his freshman season and was third on the team with 51 ground balls and second with 25 caused turnovers going into the showcase. The freshman wraps up his first season with 55 groundballs and 25 caused turnovers. Muraski was sixth in the league in caused turnovers. The freshman scored nine times with a long pole, including a pair of man-up goals. Muraski led a Baron defense that forced half of their opponents' turnovers (150 CT/306 opponent turnovers).
Rounding out the all-conference selections for the Barons with his first all-conference selection is junior midfielder, Dan McCartney. McCartney led the team and conference with 47 goals and was fifth in the league with 57 points during the regular season and now has 50 goals and 10 assists for 60 points in his junior campaign. McCartney tied the single-game record for FUS with 11 goals against La Roche and scored in 12 of the 13 games in which he played this season. McCartney racked up 82 groundballs on the season and caused 13 turnovers. The junior scored seven-man up goals and one man down this season. Currently, McCartney ranks eighth in the country in goals per game (3.85).
The Barons wrap up their sixth season in program history 6-8 after winning the 2018 AMCC showcase. Franciscan will begin competition as an affiliate member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference in the fall.
