Rugby Dominates Juniata 80-0
STEUBENVILLE— Franciscan University of Steubenville’s Baron rugby team crushed its conference competition Saturday afternoon with an 80-0 shutout against Juniata College. The Barons carried the momentum from last week’s home pitch victory as they dominated the match from start to finish. Now with a 2-0-1 record, the team is exceeding all expectations for the season.
“This is the best Franciscan rugby I’ve seen in the ten years I have been involved with the team,” said head coach Mark Hanrahan. “After the first half, the score was 59-0 and the play was nearly flawless. Our passing was outstanding today; in one try, eight or nine players touched the ball. From the forwards to the backs, this victory was a total team effort.”
Andrew Kay and Paul Lewis were the men of the match today, both playing the entire match and leading the team offensively and defensively. Andrew Kay took command of the forwards and Paul Lewis directed the backs, keeping Juniata College from ever getting in the try zone during the match.
“This team is extremely disciplined, well-conditioned, and fundamentally sound. We look forward to some stiff competition and competitive play at the next level,” said Coach Hanrahan. “After today’s performance, the team is definitely excited for next week’s Rugby Ruckus.”
The Barons host West Virginia University on Saturday, Oct. 1, for the eighth annual Robert D'Anniballe Rugby Ruckus. Franciscan will host the 7 p.m. match at Harding Stadium.
The price of admission is $5 for adults and $3 with a valid Franciscan University student ID, children ages 7-12, and senior citizens. Children six and under are free.
