PITTSBURGH, PA - The Barons soccer team of Franciscan University of Steubenville defeated Penn State-Altoona on Wednesday night in two overtimes, 1-0. With the win, the Barons improved to 6-4 (4-1) on the season, and moved into a tie for first place in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
Steve Duran was the offensive standout for the Barons of the night. Aside from scoring the team's sole goal, he controlled the tempo of the offense for the length of the game. Barons goalkeeper Billy Herrmann also had a notable performance with 6 saves and no goals allowed.
"It was a real team effort today," Barons assistant coach Tommy Lahey remarked in a post-game interview. "Altoona is a very talented team, but we played hard, and managed to come out with the win. Billy Herrmann had several amazing saves, and Steve Duran found the net at the end to seal the victory for us."
The Barons will travel to the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford this Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. contest.
