Barons Routed by Walsh University in Home Opener
STEUBENVILLE, OH - The Barons of Franciscan University of Steubenville hosted Walsh University on Tuesday night, losing 7-0. With the loss, the Barons fell to 0-1 (0-0) on the season.
Walsh University got a fast start, scoring 3 goals in the first 30 minutes of competition. First, Ben Truax scored on an assist from Chad Flath. Then, Clint Merck scored 25:56 into the half, and Truax scored again four minutes later. This lead quickly became a 7-0 rout.
Ben Truax was the top scorer on the day, finishing with 3 goals on 4 shots. Adam Brately had 1 goal on 3 shots (2 on goal) for Walsh, while teammates Clint Merek, George Moga, and Jordan Semple had one goal apiece.
Joseph Krilich was the offensive standout for Franciscan on the day, recording 2 shots (1 on goal). Teammate Steve Duran had 2 shots, while Patrick Mahon, William Milburn, and Christian Bobak each had a shot.
It was a home-coming of sorts for two Steubenville high school graduates, Derrick Gullen of Big Red, who played with Franciscan goalkeeper David Almedia in high school, and John Dubois, who played with Horatio Gonzalez at Catholic Central. On coming home to Steubenville, Dubois remarked that "it's a great way to end a long 2 week preseason."
Assistant coach Johann Marin was quick to praise the athleticism of the Walsh University athletes: "They were fast, large players, and very strong in the air. We didn't play the brand of soccer that we've been practicing. We played long balls, which were easily taken down by their defense. However, if we stick to our system, I'm confident that we will be able to compete. Although I am disappointed in my players for not sticking to our plan, I know that our defeat is not in vain because we will improve. We have to trust and move on."
The Barons' next contest is September 4 against Geneva College at 7 p.m.
