BUFFALO, N.Y. – Franciscan University's soccer teams traveled to Medaille College Saturday evening to take on the Mavericks in their first conference game of the season, coming home with a loss for both the men and the women. The Lady Barons lost to the Mavericks 2-0, while the Barons fell 4-0.
"The women came out playing evenly against Medaille College tonight with lots of goal opportunities and long passes down the field," said assistant coach Billy Herrmann.
The women took many shots on goal, especially in close range of the net, really driving the ball deep into the Maverick's end of the field. The Lady Barons took 19 shots on goal tonight, while the Mavericks took 13 shots on goal, demonstrating Franciscan's determination to get some goals. However, none of the shots connected with the net. The Lady Barons now sit 4-3 overall.
"The men also came out playing evenly against Medaille College tonight; however, the Barons had a hard time connecting their passes on the turf field," said Herrmann.
Franciscan's goal keeper Tim Vander Woude made a lot of saves on the night, showing he's "very consistent and makes good decisions about whether to come out of the goal or not," commented Herrmann. The other team had to work hard to get the goals they scored due to Vander Woude's solid playing.
The Barons now sit 1-6 overall. The Barons host Malone University this Monday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m., and the Lady Barons host Washington & Jefferson College Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 4 p.m. Stay tuned as Franciscan University soccer teams continue Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play Oct. 1.
