STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan men's soccer team has earned the fourth seed the 2016 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Tournament, beginning Saturday, October 29.
Franciscan will host fifth-seeded La Roche College on Saturday, October 29. The quarterfinal game against the Red Hawks marks the first time the Barons will play in the postseason tournament in program history.
The Barons earned a spot in the 2016 AMCC Men's Soccer tournament for the first time behind a historic 2016 campaign. Franciscan ended the regular season with a 10-5-1 and a 6-3 slate in conference action. The 10 wins marks the most in school history, topping the previous mark of nine set by the 2008 and 2009 teams. The Barons won six AMCC games this season, tying the previous top mark of 2009.
Franciscan opened the conference schedule with six-straight wins, including three-straight shutouts. Prior to conference play, the Barons posted a 4-3 overtime win over Geneva, the first time the Barons defeated the Golden Tornadoes in eight meetings.
Franciscan By The Numbers
Offensively, junior Leo Herrmann once again leads the Barons. The Wintersville, OH native leads the team and conference with 17 goals and 39 points this season. Herrmann eclipsed the 100-point mark for his career earlier this season and is one goal away from 50 as a Baron. Senior Joe Francis emerged as a dominant force for the Franciscan offense this season and is second on the team and third in the league with 10 goals and has 21 points. The all-time assist leader for Franciscan, senior captain Joseph Duran has added six more this year to bring his career total to 19.
Defensively, the Barons have posted a 1.79 GAA, the lowest for a Franciscan team and have six shutouts so far this year. Junior keeper Thomas Dosedel has four solo shutouts this season and set the team's single-season shutout mark and is one away from the career mark.
The last time the Barons and Red Hawks squared off, the Barons walked away with a 3-2 win at home. Sophomore Christopher Lann scored his first collegiate goal to put Franciscan up 1-0 at the half. The Red Hawks tied it just shortly after the second started, but Francis gave the lead back to FUS with just under 20 minutes to play. Once again, the Red Hawks tied the game but Herrmann scored the game-winning goal off an assist from junior Cuyler Ledyard with just over five to play to seal the win.
