Barons Claim Second Win of Season

Steubenville, OH - The Franciscan University of Steubenville Barons tennis team showed up to play on Saturday afternoon against D'Youville College. Franciscan beat the Spartans 7-2 in dominating fashion for their second win of the season. The Baron now stand at 2-8 (1-7) on the season.

Matt Alexander continued to play well winning both the singles and his doubles matches. Sophomore Adam Vanlieshout, who was named in the AMCC's "Best of the Rest" weekly recognition, also picked up a win in his singles match.

In doubles, the Baron swept the board. Nick Cundiff and Andrew Straub beat Jim Moran and Dick Hanaburgh 8-1. Chris Cooper and Alexander blanked Mark Wallenhorst and Owen Williams 8-0. Clark Thompson and Brad Mathisen beat Marc Moyer and Alex Babalis 8-3.

In singles, Alexander dominated Moran 6-0 and 6-1 in the No. 1 match-up. In the No. 2 match, Mathisen beat Hanaburgh 6-1 and 6-3. Thompson kept the ball rolling defeating Wallenhurst 6-3 and 6-2. In the No. 4 spot, Vanlieshout lived up to his recognition, beating Williams 6-3 and 6-3. The Spartans salvaged the last two matches, when Moyer beat Joey Alvarez 7-5, 7-5, and Greg Bliss lost to Babalis 6-4, 6-4. 

The Barons will next face conference opponent Pitt-Bradford on Sunday on the road. The final match of the season will be at home against Bethany College on April 13.
