ERIE, Pa.—Franciscan University's Baron tennis team headed out on the road again on Saturday for its second game of the season. Taking on Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Penn State Behrend, the Barons fell 5-4. Franciscan now sits 1-1 in the AMCC.
"We lost a very close game to Behrend this Saturday," said head coach Curtis Allen. "Behrend is very good team. They have been at the top of the conference year after year, and for us to compete the way we did against them was huge. We now know that we can compete with any team we come up against."
Duo Leonel Lacayo and Luke Merry brought home the only doubles win for Franciscan with an 8-2 victory. The doubles matches proved to be the winning factor on the day as Behrend and Franciscan split the singles rounds evenly 3-3. No. 1 seed Lacayo was defeated by perennial favorite Elliot Blackstone 6-3, 6-4. Paul Jarzynka, Brian Robau, and Merry all brought home the Baron wins in the singles rounds.
"I am very proud of my guys and how they played this weekend. They came ready to play," noted Coach Allen. "These past two games were huge stepping stones for us. We have been working so hard thus far and to finally get a couple matches under our belt makes us that much more comfortable with this season."
The Barons take a four day break and head back onto the road March 23, to take on Bethany College. Allen emphasizes that improvement will stay key for his team, "we know that the season is young and we have a lot of improvement to do."
