BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two of Franciscan University of Steubenville's top track and field athletes competed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference championship this Thursday at Moravian College. Clinching qualifying times during the season, senior Kailey Gotta and sophomore Bill Jones both ran in the 5,000 meter race and placed midrange out of about 30 runners.
"Both Kailey and Bill performed exceptionally well," noted head coach Vince Oliver. "Kailey finished her last season incredibly."
Gotta ran a time of 18:34.57 in the 5K, setting a new personal record in that race. Placing 18th out of 32 runners, Gotta finished her collegiate running career representing Franciscan very well. Rowan University's Jen Rawls finished first with a time of 17:17.06.
Jones competed in the men's 5K, placing 16th out of 28 runners with a time of 15:08.05 in an extremely competitive race. Though not a personal record, it was Jones' second best time of the season. Usually a dominant leader of the pack for the entire race, Jones was up against tougher competition than usual; each runner clipped in barely a second apart.
"Today was a good day for running," coach Oliver remarked. "I'm very proud."
This ECAC postseason championship marked the end of Franciscan's track and field team's season. Jones will return with the team next season, but will first be found this fall on the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship cross country team.
