Vincent Oliver is in his first year of Coaching Track & Field at Franciscan University. Vince also is a Project Coordinator at Franciscan University in the Physical Plant Services Department.
Coach Oliver has over 10 years of coaching experience at various levels of competition including 5 years as Track & Field coach at Steubenville Catholic Central's Jr. High School Program and 6 years as a Football coach at Steubenville Catholic Central High School and Jr. High Programs.
Coach Oliver is a life long resident of the Steubenville area
and attended Catholic Central High School and Slippery Rock
University. He is the son of Vincent C. Oliver and Alyce Sue
Oliver. Coach Oliver is married to Nancy and is the proud
father of six children - Isabella, Vincent Jr., Austin, Brittney,
Taylor and Zachary. He and his family currently reside in
Weirton, WV. and are members of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in
Weirton.
Dr. Thomas Matanzo is entering his second year as an assistant coach of the men’s and women’s track and field teams.
Doctor Matanzo is a graduate Franciscan University, Class of 1981. He continued his education at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry where he received his DDS. He has been coaching track for over 17 years. He comes to Franciscan after being assistant track coach in charge of sprinters and hurdlers at Steubenville Catholic Central High School. His greatest thrill was coaching each of his four children in track at Catholic Central High School. Catholic Central has had much success during Dr. Matanzo's years. Many Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Championships and a number of District and Regional Championships had been won. They have had two state champions, and many athletes have earned metals at the state meet in recent years. During his last year there in 2009, the girls’ team finished third at the Ohio State Championships and had a State Champion in the 100 Hurdles.
Doctor Matanzo is one of six children from the Bronx, New York. He and his two older brothers, James and Cesar, were runners in high school. They all competed for four years at All Hallows High School in the Bronx in cross county and indoor and outdoor track. His greatest thrill was competing at the famous Penn Relays.
Thomas is married to Beth Matanzo, who works at Franciscan. They have 4 children, three of whom have/are attending Franciscan.
Jack Thornton, Jr. is entering his second season as an Assistant Coach for the Men’s and Women’s Track and Field program. He specializes in coaching the distance team and the jumping events.
Thornton has an impressive 30 years of coaching experience in track and field, cross country and women’s basketball. Thornton is a retired educator and athletic coach of the Warren, Ohio City school district. He began and ended his teaching and coaching career at Warren Western Reserve and Warren G. Harding High Schools. His boys and girls track teams recorded numerous individual and relay team conference, county, district, and regional championships as well. He sent many individuals and relay teams to the Division I High School State Championships.
Collegiately, Thornton served as the springs and hurdles coach at Malone University in Canton, Ohio, from 2006 to 2008. During his tenure, the teams made it to the AMC Conference Championships, the National Christian College Championships. Thornton is a certified USATF Level I Coach and holds IYCA Level I Youth Fitness Specialist certification.
Thornton is the founder, program director, and head coach of the Warren Striders Track Club, Inc. and has served as the organization’s CEO since its inception in 1977. The Striders have earned numerous district and regional Junior Olympics Championships and one National Junior Olympics champion. Thornton competes as a Senior Olympian, has participated in two National Senior Olympics games (2007, 2009), placing fifth in the triple jump at both meets.
Jack is a native of Steubenville and a graduate of Steubenville High School, where he competed as a middle distance runner. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in American History and Secondary History from the College of Steubenville and graduated with a Masters of Agro-American Studies from Boston University.
Thornton currently resides in Warren, Ohio. He has two daughters and six grandchildren.
