PITTSBURGH—The Franciscan University Lady Baron softball team hit the road Thursday afternoon for their last doubleheader of the season against the Mt. Aloysius College Mounties. The competition proved to be a challenge for the Lady Baron defense, resulting in a 10-0 game one loss and 8-0 in the second, placing the team 2-16 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference for the 2011 season.
Pitching game one was senior Lara Plumlee, unable to control the Mountie offense as they gathered two triples and a homerun within the first four innings. In the third inning, the Lady Barons got a piece of the ball but popped up the majority of the time and failed to score a run. The Lady Barons continued to struggle in inning three, giving up two runs to the Mounties and allowing six more runs in the fourth to make the final score 10-0.
The second game started out slowly for both teams. Daniella Pillar singled for the Lady Barons but was left on base down 1-0. The Lady Barons felt the heat in the third inning as the Mounties tallied four doubles, seven hits and a total of six runs scored. Lady Baron Erin Gulick singled in the fourth inning but it was not enough to not come back from their deficit, as Franciscan gave up one more run to the Mounties in the fifth. The final score sat 8-0 in favor of Mt. Aloysius.
With a final overall record of 3-37, the Lady Barons look to an improved next season as the more experienced team takes the field spring 2012.
