  • Franciscan University Mourns Death of Softball Coach, Terry Leighty

    STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Franciscan University softball coach Terry Leighty died on November 13 of complications due to a stroke following heart surgery. Leighty started coaching the Lady Barons in 2010. He was 64 years old.

    STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Lady Barons of Franciscan University hosted the Chatham University Lady Cougars in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. It was Senior Night, honoring Franciscan’s lone senior Amelia Gallagher, but the celebration was spoiled by two Chatham victories. The Lady Cougars won game one, 8-2, and game two, 10-0.
  • Seventh Inning Rally Not Quite Enough

    STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Franciscan University Lady Baron softball team put together a seventh inning rally in game one of Friday’s doubleheader to score five runs over Medaille College. However, it was not enough to overcome the deficit they were already facing, and the Lady Barons fell 13-8. In game two, Medaille College finished the sweep with a 7-2 win.

    STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – After dropping their first game versus Mt. Aloysius College by a score of 13-0 in five innings, the Franciscan University Lady Barons kept the score much closer in game two. The two solo homeruns by Mountie outfielder Jalisa Westover left the Lady Barons with a 2-1 loss and just shy of their first win of the season.

    HAMBURG, N.Y. — Franciscan University’s softball team faced Hilbert College in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon losing 19-3 in the first game. Although the Lady Barons rallied to challenge the Hawks more in the second game, they lost it too, 12-7.

    ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona put on an offensive display against the Franciscan University Lady Baron softball team as the Lady Lions accounted for 15 extra-base hits as part of a 33-hit, 43-run doubleheader. Franciscan fell 20-0 to Altoona in game one and 23-3 in game two.

    STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Franciscan University pitcher Amanda Ruwart started the day in the circle with three hitless innings to start game one, but struggled in the last four innings as the Lady Barons dropped game one of a doubleheader with Penn State Beaver, 12-4. In game two the Lady Barons continued to struggle and Beaver was victorious, 14-3.

In game two of the day, the Lady Baron bats came alive, but the final score still was not in their favor as they lost 13-11.

    STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – In each game of the Franciscan University softball home opener doubleheader, Oberlin College's Emily King did something that not many players have done. In the first game, a 9-0 Oberlin victory, King went 3-4 with three homeruns and four RBIs, and in the second game, which Oberlin won 10-0, King was called to the mound and threw the first perfect game of her career.

So she gathered her Franciscan University Lady Baron softball team Wednesday night to volunteer at the Blue and Gold Banquet for Steubenville’s Boy Scout Pack No. 401. With preseason practice beginning today, it was a perfect service-oriented warm up for the Lady Barons.
