SOUTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Franciscan softball team opened the 2018 season with a sweep of Clarks Summit, Tuesday. The Lady Barons won the first game with an impressive 11-1 five-inning win before completing the sweep with a 12-2 five-inning victory.
The Lady Barons victories were highlighted by outstanding pitching performances from freshman Andi Queen in the first game and sophomore Jayln Effertz in the nightcap. Queen went the full five innings, surrendering just four hits and one unearned run while striking out four in her Franciscan debut. Effertz was equally dominant in her five-inning performance in the second game. Effertz allowed just two runs in the first inning before shutting down Clarks Summit with six strikeouts and two hits.
"We got really good pitching today as both J and Andi kept them off balance with their off-speed pitches," commented head coach James Walker. "We made the routine plays behind them that we needed to to be successful"
Offensively, the Lady Barons were led by a balanced attack as nine players had at least one base hit across the two games. Sophomore Dennise Carrazco and freshman Allyson Weiss each finished the day with six hits while freshman Victoria Clute and sophomore captain Ashley Krodracki picked up four hits.
"The top of our order really set the table for us today," remarked Coach Walker. "Razco and Wheeze were vital for us at the plate."
Carrazco and Weiss each scored five runs while Carrazco and Kondracki drove in five runs.
The Lady Baron speed was on display today as Franciscan stole 19 bases between the two games, including a school-record 12 in the first game. Carrazco was 4-4 on the basepaths while Weiss, Clute, and junior captain Anna Ames each stole three bases.
"We put a lot of pressure on teams with our speed and you saw that today," remarked Coach Walker. "It was nice to see all the freshmen, Andi, Weiss, Clute, & Ally Kuntz, contribute on the first day."
The Lady Barons return to action in Myrtle Beach tomorrow as they take on Alfred State and Keystone at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm, respectively.
