STEUBENVILLE, Oh.— More than one-hundred fans gathered to honor Lady Baron seniors Christine Conrad and Kristin Belleque Wednesday evening, demonstrating the fans' appreciation of the commitment the girls have shown to both the team and Franciscan University athletics as a whole. Unfortunately, the enthusiasm of the crowd was not enough to turn the tide in favor of the Lady Barons, and it was a difficult night for the women's basketball team as they struggled to keep pace with the Lady Hawks of La Roche College, losing 88-52.
"La Roche played very well tonight, "said head coach Luke Heusel. "You can't afford to get into a hole with that kind of a team. You've got to keep it tight with them. Tonight we just couldn't do it defensively."
Despite the Lady Baron defensive shortcomings, however, there were positive elements to the game, such as Hannah Flanagan's two 3 pointers near the end of the second half and the high scores put up by Amy O'Keefe, with 16 points, and Lacey Huck, with 14 points and 12 rebounds. "Lacey and Amy are going to be an exciting pair to watch over the next three years," Heusel said.
Overall, the game was a learning experience for the Lady Barons, who, with only two seniors and four incoming freshmen, are still focusing on coming together as a team. "We're a young team that's got to work on doing things consistently," noted Heusel. "But, the good news is that we are a young team."
Now standing 2-21 in the overall season and 2-15 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, the Lady Barons look to secure one more win before tournament season in Buffalo against D'Youville College this Saturday, Feb. 18. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
