ALTOONA, Pa. - Freshman Abby Baierl had a career-day for the Franciscan women's basketball team as she led the Lady Barons to a 68-67 overtime road win against Penn St.-Altoona, Wednesday night.
Picking up their second win in as many games against the Lady Lions, the Lady Barons got off to a hot start. With the game tied 14-14 after the first quarter, Franciscan's offense exploded for a 22-9 second quarter and the 36-23 lead going into halftime.
Baierl led the Lady Barons with 13 points at halftime.
The third quarter was the Lady Lions turn to have a breakout offensive show. In the third, PSA out-scored Franciscan 20-4 and took a slim 43-40 lead with ten minutes left in regulation.
Francicsan and Penn St.-Altoona engaged in a tight battle in the fourth and finished regulation tied 59-59. The Lady Barons out-scored the Lady Lions 19-16 in the fourth.
Detirmined to earn their second win of the season, the Lady Barons kept Penn St.- Altoona close in the first overtime period. Knotted at 67-67 with eight seconds to play, PSA fouled Baierl and sent her to the free throw line. Baierl hit the first of two free throws to give Franciscan a 68-67 lead. Baierl missed the second free throw but the Lady Barons came down with the rebound and were able to run out the clock and seal the 68-67 win.
Baierl led all players with 28 points and 17 rebounds while junior Sarah Schriner added 19 points. Sophomore Gaby DeJesus dished out five assists for the Lady Barons.
Franciscan continues their short road trip on Saturday when the Lady Barons head to Hilbert for a 2pm contest.
