Lady Barons Fall to D'Youville

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's basketball team fell to D'Youville College at home, 68-50, Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Barons were led by junior Gaby DeJesus with 10 points and five assists while freshmen Annie McGraw and Rebekah Nevarez each added nine points. Sophomore Cianna Vaughan finished the day with a team-high eight rebounds and two blocks.

The Spartans (6-7, 4-2 AMCC) raced out to an 11-0 start in the opening three minutes of the first quarter. DeJesus drained a three with 6:43 to play to kick off an 8-0 run for the Lady Barons to cut the lead to three points, 11-8, with 5:22 to play. The Spartans were able to push their lead back to 10, 22-12, with 2:23 to play. Nevarez trimmed the deficit back down to single digits with a jumper but the Spartans were able to out-score the Lady Barons 4-1 in the final two minutes of the quarter to lead 26-15 after 10  minutes.

The second quarter opened with much of the same back and forth action the first closed with. Nevarez's opening-quarter three-pointer got the Lady Barons to within three, but Darian Evans hit back-to-back jumpers to push the Spartan lead back to 12, 30-18. Franciscan was able to keep the Spartan offense in check and not allow a run longer than four points for the rest of the quarter and Nevarez made a jumper in the final 10 seconds of the half to keep Franciscan within 12, 38-26, at halftime.

Franciscan out-scored the Spartans 9-7 over the first 5:39 to trim the lead to single-digits, 46-35, for the first time since the first quarter with a jumper from sophomore Abby Baierl. The Spartans closed out the quarter with an 11-5 run, including three three-pointers but McGraw hit a three in the final 10 seconds with the last basket of the quarter. Franciscan trailed 54-40 with 10 minutes to play.

McGraw opened the fourth the same way she closed out the third, with a deep three, to keep the Lady Barons close. The Spartans used 10 unanswered points over the next five minutes to take their largest lead of the game, 64-43 with 3:51 to play in regulation. McGraw's third three of the game halted the Spartans run and kicked off a 7-0 run for the Lady Barons spanning the next 2:14. The Spartans were able to hold off the Lady Barons, however, and closed out the contest with a 4-0 run to seal the 68-50 win.

As a team, the Lady Barons shot 36.4% from the floor and won the rebound battle 42-36.

Franciscan takes a brief break from AMCC action as the Lady Barons head to Grove City on Monday for a 6pm non-conference contest.
