GROVE CITY, Pa. – Despite a strong fourth quarter, the Franciscan women's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest to Grove City, 76-36, Monday evening.
The Lady Barons came out strong in the fourth quarter with a 7-2 run over the first 2:11 of action, including four points from sophomore Abby Baierl. The two teams traded the next four baskets until Lauren Frederick made a pair of free throws for Grove City with 4:47 to play. Sophomore Rose Judge answered just over a minute later with a layup to cut the deficit to 69-36 before the Wolverines closed out the game with seven unanswered points to seal the 76-36 victory.
In the fourth, the Lady Barons shot 31.6% from the floor while holding the Wolverines to a 27.8 shooting percentage, their lowest of the game in a quarter. Franciscan had its highest point total in the quarter while holding Grove City to its lowest.
Grove City built a 12-3 lead in the first eight minutes of the game before closing out the first quarter with a 4-0 run to lead 16-3 after the first 10 minutes of action. The Lady Barons kept the gap at 13 with jumper from Baierl before Kelsey Scott-Avery made a layup to get within 11, 18-7, with 8:27 to play in the second quarter. The Wolverines then went on a 14-4 run over the next three minutes to take a 21-point lead, 32-11, with 5:27 to play before halftime. Junior Raegan Stead halted the run with a layup with 3:30 to play before freshman Annie McGraw hit a jumper to cut the lead to 35-15. Grove City closed out the half with a 5-0 run to take the 40-15 lead into halftime.
Grove City out-scored the Lady Barons 21-8 in the third quarter, before the Lady Barons came out strong in the final quarter.
Baierl led the Lady Barons with 11 points while junior Gaby DeJesus added eight points and two steals. Judge led Franciscan with eight rebounds and two blocks.
Franciscan shot 36.4% from the floor for the game and the two teams were even on the boards with 39 rebounds each.
Franciscan returns to AMCC action on Saturday as the Lady Barons travel to Medaille for a 4pm tip.
