Lady Barons Search for Consistency in Loss to Thiel
GREENVILLE, Pa.— The Franciscan University women's Lacrosse team suffered a frustrating defeat to Thiel College in a game that resulted in a final score of 20-0.
The Lady Barons struggled to put together a cohesive first half, allowing 14 goals, but the second half saw a defensive come-back for the FUS women as they held their opponents to six goals.
"The second half was definitely better," head coach Maura Conant said. "The defense was able to communicate better and they were double-teaming and making better decisions on defense."
Having lost to Thiel in a pre-season scrimmage with a score of 12-0, Conant said she had expected the team to be a challenging opponent but believed that this time her team needed to focus on having a more disciplined approach to the game. She added that the last four games have been a series of ups and downs for the Lady Barons.
"It's just being consistent and confident in the skills that we know and learning how to be consistent even when we're playing different teams at different levels of talent," Conant said
As a young, first-year program, Conant said the Lady Barons are still solidifying their individual roles on the team as well. One player who stepped up to fill several spots the game against Thiel was sophomore Lindsay Matthys.
"Lindsey was all over the place today for us," Conant said. "We asked her to play a lot of different roles. She usually plays high attack, but today she played midfield and low defender."
Overall, despite the difficult loss, Conant said her team will be focusing ahead on playing under pressure with both discipline and consistency.
The Lady Barons will next face Medaille College at home on Saturday, March 23 at 1pm.
