Lady Barons Meet Specific Goals in Loss
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio- Lady Baron lacrosse lost to Otterbein University 14-1 in their first game in almost two weeks. Franciscan was expecting Otterbein, which is a more experienced program, to be a challenging match. Head Coach Maura Conant said she was still proud of her team despite the loss.
"Overall, there were more positives than negatives. We haven't played in a couple weeks," Conant said. "I'm impressed with how intense we came out for being out for so long."
Midfielder and leading scorer Lauren Noce scored the lone goal for the Lady Barons after intercepting a pass on defense, running the length of the field and scoring with less than two minutes left in the first half.
Defensively, Conant decided to switch up positions between Jenna Gottemoeller, who usually plays goalie, and Bethany Potvin, who is normally a defender. This switch was also made in the second half of the previous game against Medaille, and it was a move Conant said worked well.
"Beth and Jenna did well in their new positions," Conant said.
Potvin had nine saves for the Barons, some of which were penalty-shots and point-blank looks. Conant said she was also pleased with Gottemoeller's performance as a field player.
"I was really impressed with Jenna," Conant said. "She was loud and athletic on defense."
The defense also succeeded in accomplishing their pre game goals, which was one of the specific team goals that are set before every game.
"Defensively, we didn't want to allow more than one goal in the first five minutes, and we met that," Conant said. "Offensively, we wanted under 15 turnovers, and I think it was the least amount we've ever had."
As the Lady Barons continue to improve, Conant said she sees each game as a new chance for her first year team to gain experience.
"It's all experience and consistency and making good decisions," Conant said about the areas the team needs to work on. "It takes time and experience to make good decisions and every game is a new start."
The Lady Barons will be on the road Saturday, April 6 against Baldwin Wallace at 1 p.m.
