Soccer Has a Goal for the Season

STEUBENVILLE—With the men’s and women’s soccer season starting up later this week, head coach Johann Marin foresees a challenging schedule and training regimen as the best preparation for conference competition.

“Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that a winning team is as strong as its weakest link,” said Marin. “Through discipline in faith and virtue we hope to use soccer as a vehicle to materialize our love for Christ and evangelize the gospel through this beautiful game.”

The men’s team is ranked seventh after tying the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford for fifth place last season. Marin said the drop in ranking may be due to a large graduating class, but the roster has been replenished with young talent, which the Barons hope will complement their returning players.

The women’s team is ranked seventh after finishing seventh last season. Marin plans to finish above the ranking this season with this year and last’s talented incoming freshman classes.

“We hope to continue maturing these players into competitive athletes who will make their presence felt in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.”

The player to watch for men’s soccer is Joe Krilich, midfielder, for his ball control. Marin expects to see penetrating passes and deceptive dribbling from Krilich.

For women’s soccer the players to watch are Amanda Looman, forward, for her aggressiveness and speed, and Lauren Koath, goalkeeper, for her confidence, discipline and aggressiveness.

“We expect to see entertaining finishing from Amanda and astounding saves from Lauren,” said Marin.

The new recruit Marin is most excited to have playing for the Barons is Brian Boback, who Marin believes will be the missing link in the Baron attack line due to his knack for scoring and smart attack abilities.

For the Lady Barons, Marin is most excited for new recruit Ashley Ruttencutter. She’s a local who will bring stability to the midfield with her great vision and hard work.

The Barons host Waynesburg University this Saturday, Sept. 3 at noon for their opening competition. The Lady Barons kick start their season Thursday, Sept. 1, hosting Chatham University.
