Waynesburg, Pa. — The Lady Baron soccer team started its season with a 6-1 loss against non-conference opponent Waynesburg University. Despite being overmatched by the Yellow Jackets, head coach Johann Marin saw some silver-linings in the loss.
"The score was not what we were looking for but this game is not a defeat in my book," Marin said. "Tonight was very beneficial for us because it put things into perspective on what we need to work on to improve for the rest of the season."
Midway through the first period Ashley Ruttencutter, a sophomore from Wintersville, Ohio, scored Franciscan's only goal of the night giving the team some momentum to keep pushing forward.
"I am very happy with the performance of the team because they utilized all the skills we have practiced and as a coach that is everything I could ask for," Marin said.
Lady Baron goalkeeper Lauren Koath, a junior from Flower Mound, Texas, had eight saves on the night helping her team to come away with more goals saved than given up.
"This game gave us an opportunity to go against a worthy opponent and help to prepare us for our goal of finishing in the top three in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference," Marin said.
The Lady Baron's home opener is Sunday Sept. 2 versus Muskingum University with the start time scheduled for 4 p.m.
