STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's soccer dropped a tough 3-0 contest to visiting La Roche on Wednesday evening.
La Roche got out to a quick start with two goals early on in the first. Allesandra Perri drew the Franciscan goalie out of the net and Vanessa Ceravolo finished off the goal with a soft inside the left-hand post to give the Red Hawks a 1-0 12:46.
Ceravolo put La Roche up 2-0 just five minutes later as she gained control of the ball about 25 yards out and dribbled through two Lady Baron defenders and scored her second goal of the game as she shot from left to right.
Junior Anna McCarty took Franciscan's only shot of the first half but it went wide and the score remained 2-0 in favor of La Roche as the two teams went into halftime.
Franciscan created several good scoring opportunities to kick off the second half but couldn't get past the Red Hawk goalie. Savannah Luebking got the first ball on net for the Lady Barons but was turned away by Jessica Welka. Emma Cross put a tough ball on net but couldn't slip it past Welka and Megan Luiso and Megan Riederer had a pair of hard shots towards the net blocked.
The Lady Barons defense cleared out a pair of Red Hawk corner kicks to keep the score 2-0 in the 73rd minute but Perri scored one of her own with 15:51 to play off an assist from Morgan Bullock and La Roche held tight to a 3-0 lead.
In the waning seconds, Jasmine Florentino put a ball right on net to try to break up the shutout but Welka stopped it to end the game at 3-0.
La Roche out-shot the Lady Barons 13-11 for the game but FUS out-shot the Red Hawks 10-5 in the second half.
Freshman goalie Glorianne Trippe finished the day with eight saves.
The Lady Barons return to the field on Saturday as they travel to Pitt.-Bradford for a 1pm AMCC game.
