Franciscan Athletics Serves Women with New Tennis Program

STEUBENVILLE, OH – Opportunities are growing for
Franciscan University’s women with the formation of a Fall
2010 Lady Barons tennis team. “We want to offer another
opportunity for the female student-athletes to select a new arena
for personal growth, development and competition” explained
Chris Ledyard, Athletic Director of Franciscan University.
A women’s tennis team was the most highly requested sport to
be added by current students and prospective high school
student-athletes. Women who join the Fall 2010 tennis team will
have immediate opportunities for postseason play. Those eligible
will be able to participate in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate
Conference (AMCC) Championship.
The creation of the women’s tennis team is the
university’s fourteenth NCAA Division III sport.
Through collaborative efforts between the university and the City
of Steubenville, 6 new tennis courts were added to the renovated
Belleview Park. This collaboration allows Franciscan full usage of
the courts during their NCAA seasons.
This Spring Franciscan will host a club women’s tennis
tournament which will serve as preliminary tryouts for the Fall
2010 regular season.
