Franciscan University now sponsors NCAA Women's Tennis
STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan University of Steubenville Athletic Department is proud to announce the addition of women’s tennis to its NCAA Division III varsity athletics program. The Lady Barons Tennis team will begin its inaugural season this fall with Curtis Allen as head coach.
Allen will also continue as head coach for the men’s tennis team as it moves into its second year of varsity play.
“I’m excited to be able to now work with the women’s tennis team, too,” Allen commented. “Our Lady Barons will bring a new enthusiasm and perspective to the sport that will enhance our tennis teams greatly. It is a new opportunity for the women of this university to grow in their athletic skills, grow in their faith, and bond as a community.”
Word of the new team has current female Franciscan students who have previously played the sport beginning to practice for the tryouts this fall. Allen advises all current or incoming students to “play now, play all the time, and stay conditioned” as the summer quickly transitions into the fall.
Athletic Director Chris Ledyard looks forward to the additional women’s sport, noting: “The emergence of women’s tennis at Franciscan University is another exciting step towards serving the student body and developing great leaders.”
Other universities in the tri-state area are already contacting Coach Allen for a spot on the fall schedule, giving the team an opportunity to play more competitive teams outside of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. “These games will give us an immediate chance to compete against some aggressive collegiate talent,” Allen said. “The Lady Barons will face some difficult competition, but it only means we will hit the ground running with a strong, competitive edge.”
