ERIE, Pa.—The Lady Baron tennis team began its sophomore season with a loss against the Penn State Behrend Lions Saturday afternoon with a final score of 8-1. The only win from the day was secured by No. 6 singles seed, freshmen Hannah Petit.
"Hannah had a tough first set but pulled a win at 7-5," head coach Jenna Lynch said. "Her second set was more confident and she won 6-1."
The Lady Barons finished the 2010 season – their inaugural season—with a win, but the momentum didn't carry through to this year. Saturday's match was the conference opener for Franciscan, who now begins with a losing record of 0-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC).
"The loss was a result of nerves and a lack of confidence in their ability and talent," noted Coach Lynch. "Behrend is one of the best teams… and we will not meet them again until conference championships. I think our girls will be unbeatable once we gain the confidence to play our game and play to our potential."
The Lady Barons face a new opportunity to balance out their record versus a conference opponent this Sunday, Sept. 4, when they will travel to University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
