GREENSBURG, Pa.—Shutting out conference foe the Lady Bobcats 9-0 on Saturday, the Lady Baron tennis team added another win to the start of its season. The defeat over the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg gives Franciscan University an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference standing of 3-1 as the Lady Barons look to continue their early-season success.
"The girls played phenomenally today," said head coach Jenna Lynch. "They swept all six singles matches and all three doubles matches—every girl on the team continues to play with more confidence and intensity as the season progresses."
The doubles rounds were a sweeping victory for the Lady Barons as Jen Winkle and Alanna Murray, sitting in the No. 1 spot, defeated Pitt-Greensburg 8-3. Lean Roggensack and Kaylene Godnick followed with an 8-1 victory while Kristina Godnick and Lucia Neugebauer took the win as No. 3 seed, 8-2.
Kristina Godnick went on to shut out Melissa Dawida in the No. 4 singles match, 6-0, 6-0.
"Kristina player her best match so far this season," Lynch said. "She played with a high level of intensity and didn't give her opponent a single game."
The strength of Lynch's roster shined as No. 6 seed Hannah Pettit defeated Lady Bobcat Melissa Cubin 6-2, 6-0. Alanna Murray faced more of a challenge at the No. 2 spot versus Cayla Ray, going for three sets for the win, 6-2, 5-7, 12-10.
"Alanna played with incredible consistency and aggression," Lynch added.
The Lady Barons don't get a rest as they host their home opener tomorrow, Sept. 18 versus Penn State Altoona at 1 p.m. Coach Lynch remains confident that the team will continue its success.
"The girls are continuing to improve and I'm confident our record will continue to reflect the heart and dedication they play with in practice."
