Lady Baron Tennis on a Five-Game Winning Streak

STEUBENVILLE—Franciscan University's tennis team continued its winning streak on Saturday as the Lady Barons shutout Medaille College, 9-0. The home court victory was yet another indicator of the quickly improving women's tennis team, currently in its sophomore season.

"The girls really played well," said head coach Jenna Lynch. "The team we play tomorrow will be a little more aggressive and next week we're playing a Division II team. So seeing them play on the level that they did today is encouraging."

Leann Roggensack—who won a match-deciding tiebreaker last week—won another point-for-point tiebreaker, this time with No. 1 doubles partner Alanna Murray. At 1-4, they came from behind to finish 9-8 in regular play and win the tiebreaker 8-6.

"Their opponent was aggressive at the net," Lynch noted, "so they played strategically to find a lot of open court."

Mary O'Brien and Kristina Godnick won the No. 2 doubles seed 8-1, and partners Kaylene Godnick and Hannah Pettit took the No. 2 doubles seed 8-3. In singles play, Murray won the No. 1 seed 12-1, Roggensack won the No. 2 seed due to a forfeit, and No. 3 seed Kristina Godnick won 12-5. Also winning 12-5 was undefeated freshman Hannah Pettit, playing at No. 5 singles.

The victory boosts the Lady Baron Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference record to 6-1 on the season and 6-2 overall. The team hosts D'Youville College at home tomorrow, Sept. 25, at 1:00 p.m.
