STEUBENVILLE - Back on the courts for the third time in two days, the Franciscan University women's tennis team continued their undefeated streak, defeating La Roche College 8-1.
A perfect 3-0 within conference play, the Lady Barons got off to a fast start Sunday, as No. 1 and No. 2 doubles recorded dominant scores of 8-3 and 8-2, respectively. Set up by strong service returns, teammates Maggie Vander Woude and Taranee Karimpour controlled the net on their way to eventually claiming No. 3 doubles, 8-6.
Already up 3-0 after the conclusion of doubles, the Lady Barons extended their overall lead during singles play, as Madelyn Conrad was the first off the court after winning at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3. Fellow freshman Grace Hammel soon joined her teammate, registering a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles, and recording the fifth overall point of the afternoon.
No. 6 singles was decided in a familiarly dominant fashion, as with a score of 6-2, 6-2 senior Erin Coyne soon put away her opponent.
10-point tiebreakers decided the next two matches. Team captain Claire Haddad battled back from a set down to take the second, 6-0, and fought for every point before losing No. 4 singles in a tight tiebreaker, 6-10.
Cheered on by her teammates, sophomore Maria Binette, down 6-9 in her tiebreaker and facing match points, won the next five points to complete her comeback, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6, in what was clearly the match of the day. Last on the court junior Maggie Vander Woude clinched her first set in a tiebreak, before breaking her opponent's serve en route to a decisive 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles.
The Lady Barons next return to the court on September 18, when put their unbeaten 4-0 record on the line against Pitt.-Bradford.
