Barons Track and Field Break School Records

WHEELING, WV-The Franciscan University of Steubenville's women's track team competed in their first outdoor meet of the 2009 season on Saturday at Wheeling Jesuit University. Franciscan University had record-breaking performances and placed ninth out of 13 teams.

The women's team had many great performances. Junior Monica Rust scored 15 points for the women by placing first in the steeple chase in a time of 12:20.31 and by placing fourth in the 800m race in a time of 2:25.21. Junior Erin Bliss pulled in eight points for the team by breaking her own record and placing second in the 5k meter race, setting the new school record at 18:04.49. In the same 5k race, sophomore Theresa Evans contributed two points to the team by placing seventh in a time of 19:33.77. Franciscan's last two points came from sophomore Anna Scarnecchia as she placed seventh in the 400m hurdles in a time of 1:11.92 minutes.

"We are starting to succeed in all of our different events," comments head coach Dr. Dan Kuebler post-meet. Dr. Shrek, the head sprinting coach, observes, "Even for the first meet, many sprinters ran their personal best." Both coaches noted the teams' growth and development, especially on the men's team.

Look for Franciscan as they compete in their next meet in Washington, PA at the Washington and Jefferson Invite.
