GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Franciscan University Lady Baron Volleyball team started off their conference season with a two-match victory sweep besting both the Lady Mavericks of Medaille College and Lady Hawks of Hilbert College 3-0 Saturday afternoon. The wins ended a six match losing streak for Franciscan. The Lady Barons are now 6-11 overall and 2-0 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
The Lady Barons were revived by the return of Meg Kay to the net: she came out strong with 10 kills against Medaille. "She provides our team with the power to end points, to put games away," said head coach Kelly Herrmann. The unfailing Nicole Henson led the defensive force with 18 digs, with an additional 10 from Maria Prezzia.
"Sydney Disselkamp's block-kill in the first game gave us a confidence boost to start us off," said Herrmann, "but then we found ourselves down 24-20 in the second game. Refocusing in a timeout, we found the confidence to come back and win 30-28."
Franciscan faced Hilbert College for a second conference match on the day. Dominating all three games, the Lady Barons won 25-11, 25-13, and 25-22.
"We had to be careful not to be overly confident," said Herrmann. "It's a challenge to stay focused, but it comes down to controlling your side of net."
Leading in kills, Meg Kay and Anna Cain attacked with nine and seven, respectively. For assists, the steady Grace Burnham gave 15. Maria Prezzia stepped up and served six aces while Wappes not only added six digs, but gave five assists and four aces.
The Franciscan University's Lady Barons head to Penn State Altoon this Wednesday to take on the Lady Lions beginning at 7 p.m.
