STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan volleyball team swept its way to a 3-0 win over Penn St.-Behrend on Saturday afternoon on a day when the Lady Barons honored their two graduating seniors.
Following the match, head coach Kelly Herrmann honored the two graduating seniors, Rachel Potopa and Mary Moore, for their four years of dedication and hard work. "If there is any way to describe the two of them is they are quiet, strong leaders in both good times and hard ones."
TheLady Barons held control of the match from beginning to end for a complete match for FUS. Franciscan won its first two set 25-20 before wrapping up the match with a 25-16 set win in the third.
Leading the Lady Baron offense were sophomore Maria Ciola and freshman Roz Pridemore. Each hitter had 11 kills while Pridemore hit .474 with just two errors on the afternoon. Potopa and Haven split the setting duties and Haven finished with 14 assists and Potopa, 12. Moore finished the day with 13 digs from the back line.
"What a difference passing makes for a team," remarked coach Herrmann. "We passed well today and that allowed us to really get the offense going and get the middles involved."
As a team, the Lady Barons led Penn State Behrend in every category. FUS had 37 kills to the Lions 33; seven service aces to their four, 49 digs to 45 digs and 6.0 total blocks to their 5.5.
"It was a complete match for us today and I am really proud of how this team has come together and work hard. We have had a challenging season but because these girls truly love each other and want to help each other, they have been able to get through these challenges."
The Lady Barons host Pitt.-Greensburg on Wednesday at 7pm for the final regular season home game of the season.
