MARIETTA, Ohio – The Franciscan volleyball team fell to Marietta in straight sets Tuesday evening,
The Lady Barons came out of the gate strong, taking an 8-5 lead in the first set but the Pioneers' consistent and veteran play at the net carried them to a 25-16 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
"We are definitely a young team," remarked head coach Kelly Herrmann following the match. "We made mistakes but we definitely learned from today. I am very proud of the girls' attitude today. They never gave up and kept fighting. You don't get any better by moping around and the girls kept their head held high and fought until the last point."
Marietta held the advantage in the second set and used a pair of five-point runs to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-9 win.
The Lady Barons struggled to find a rhythm in the final set and Marietta held strong as the Pioneers took the final set, 25-14.
"I am definitely disappointed in the loss but now is the time to grow and learn from our mistakes and I really think the girls did that today," continued Coach Herrmann. "We will take what we learned today and move on to the next match."
Franciscan returns to the court on Friday as the Lady Barons open the Ginny Hunt Classic against Frostburg on Friday at 5 pm.
