Lady Barons Improve from Last Year
Oberlin, OH-The women's cross country teams from Franciscan University of Steubenville competed against some of the fastest NCAA Division III schools in the U.S. at the Inter Regional Rumble hosted by Oberlin College. The women finished in eighth place out of 25 teams with 212 points. This was an eight place improvement over last year's race.
This race marked the first time where all women's varsity members were able to compete this season. Senior Erin Bliss led the women's team by finishing the race with a strong kick. Bliss ran the 6k race in a school record-breaking time of 21:58 and placed ninth out of 216 runners. Not far behind came sophomore Theresa Evans who placed 12th overall with a personal-record time of 22:01. Senior Monica Rust also ran a personal record time of 22:17 and placed 17th overall. Junior Katherine Manion placed fourth for the team and ran her personal record for the 6k race in 23:37. Finishing the score for the team was junior Lexie Mathis who ran 24:17. The Lady Barons missed seventh place by one point to the College of New Jersey and were behind the first place team, Johns Hopkins, by 150 points. Case-Western Reserve took second overall with 105 points and Oberlin College came in third with 128 points.
"The women's team never ceases to amaze me," commented head coach Dr. Daniel Kuebler post-race.
The team will compete in their last meet of the 2009 season at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships on October 31st in Eerie, PA.
