Lady Barons Tie for 3rd at Saint Vincent College Invite

The women's cross country teams from Franciscan University of Steubenville traveled to St. Vincent College on Saturday, September 26, to compete in the SVC XC Invite. The women's team tied for fourth place, even though their top two runners were disqualified.

The women's team, hoping to win the meet, ended up tying for third place with Geneva and Westminster College with 135 points. With less than 800m left in the race, Franciscan's first and second runners, Theresa Evans and Erin Bliss, were in first and second place when they missed a turn to stay on course and were disqualified from the race. Finishing first for the team was senior Monica Rust, who placed third overall in the 5k race in a time of 19:31 minutes. Junior Lexie Mathis helped the team by finishing 17th in 20:44 minutes. Next to finish was sophomore Anna Hogan, who placed 34 in 21:37 with freshman Danielle Bonneson following closely at 20:50. Placing fifth for the team was sophomore Mary Neven Brockway, who finished in 22:08. Grove City took first with 51 points, barely beating Cal-U, who gathered 52 points.

"It was a great performance all-around," commented coach Dr. Daniel Kuebler post-race. "The men are showing great improvement, and the women are running consistently."

The Lady Barons will compete next at the All-Ohio Championships in Delaware, OH on October 2, 2009.
