STEUBENVILLE—It’s that time of year again! Time to sign your son or daughter up for the 2011 summer camps at Franciscan University of Steubenville. The FUS Baron Sports Camps offer local area high school sports teams and junior high athletes the opportunity to participate in basketball, tennis, soccer, and women’s volleyball camps. New to this year’s camps is a program called Happy Feet, geared toward soccer enthusiasts ages 2 to 9 years.

Directed by some of Franciscan’s NCAA Div. III head coaches, the camps will also boast some top coaches from around the tri-state area.

Franciscan’s head volleyball coach Kelly Herrmann will serve as camp director for the junior high volleyball and basketball camps as well as the women’s volleyball high school team camp. Featured on the coaching staff is La Roche College head volleyball coach Megan Snyder and her assistant coach Nicole Bajuszik. Lady Baron basketball head coach, Luke Heusel, will serve on the coaching staff for the junior high basketball camp.

Morning and afternoon sessions are available for all of Herrmann’s camps. The junior high volleyball camp will take place June 27-30, the high school volleyball team camp will follow July 11-14, and the junior high basketball camp will run August 1-4. Click here for the registration brochure.

Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference men’s tennis Coach of the Year Curtis Allen brought Franciscan’s Baron tennis team to the AMCC championship title this 2011 season, and he is now bringing his tennis expertise to local athletes. Women’s high school tennis players can participate in an evening camp June 6-10, while a men’s high school tennis morning camp will take place from June 20-24. Former NAIA tennis player and current coach to Div. I players and state qualified high schoolers, Jeremy Ellis will serve as Allen’s assistant coach at the camps. Former Trinidad and Tobago U-17 World Cup goalkeeper and current Franciscan University head soccer coach Johann Marin will direct high school soccer team camps and an intensive technique camp exclusively for high school goalkeepers. From July 11-15, high school women’s soccer teams will work with Marin, his assistant coaches Ward Rogers and Kelly O’Brien, Bethany College’s head women’s soccer coach Peter Parikakis, and Carlow University’s head women’s soccer coach Marcus Pollidore. High school men’s soccer teams will receive the same opportunity July 18-22. All goalkeepers looking for a more extensive training can sign up to train with Coach Marin, Crescent Country High School goalkeeper coach Mark Sappington, and Robert Morris University’s head women’s soccer coach Dama Fedelie for the goalkeeper camp July 25-28. An opportunity for parents with young children interested in soccer is the latest addition to the FUS Baron Sports Camps. Using the Happy Feet and Legends soccer program, Coach Marin will guide 2-5 year olds through the Happy Feet program and first through third graders through the Legends soccer program. The young campers will engage in creative play while developing coordination, agility, balance, kinesthetic awareness, and ball control. This camp will take place July 5-8.
